What should I do when somebody dies?

This question is often asked and hopefully the following will help clarify some of the necessary first steps that need to be taken

If someone dies at home you should call the doctor, who will sign the medical certificate confirming the cause of death, and tell you when it is appropriate to call the Funeral Director.  If the death happens in hospital the doctor there will issue the medical certificate.

This certificate must be taken to the Registrar of births, marriages and deaths within 5 days after the death.  Please note that you will need to make an appointment to see the Registrar, among the paperwork given to you there, including copies the Death certificate, will be a green form called The Registrar's Certificate for Burial or Cremation.  This form must be given to the Funeral Director as soon as possible, because without this as authorisation he will be unable to collect the deceased from a hospital mortuary.

If the death was sudden or unusual it will be reported to the Coroner's Office and a post mortem may be needed to establish the cause of death.  It is important to tell the Funeral Director this as it may affect the length of time before the funeral can take place.
